1. Pendahuluan

Refleksi jurnal ini ditulis bertujuan untuk melaporkan setiap langkah kerja yang dilakukan dalam usaha untuk menjayakan projek pembangunan diri kumpulan kami, iaitu tajuk projek yang kami jalankan ialah “Gaya Hidup Sihat: Satu Kajian Tentang Kesedaran Pelajar Terhadap Cara Hidup Sihat yang Betul”.

Di dalam jurnal ini kami menyatakan beberapa refleksi yang telah berlaku dalam usaha untuk menjayakan projek ini, di mana di antaranya adalah kami menyatakan peristiwa-peristiwa yang berlaku sepanjang projek ini dijalankan. Projek dibawah naugan kami ini memerlukan banyak langkah di mana terdapat urutan-urutan peristiwa yang penting yang berlaku. Tanpa salah satu peristiwa tersebut ataupun tanpa urutan peristiwa yang betul, projek “Gaya Hidup Sihat: Satu Kajian Tentang Kesedaran Pelajar Terhadap Cara Hidup Sihat yang Betul” ini mungkin tidak dapat disiapkan dengan sempurna dan dengan jayanya.

Projek ini juga dilakukan dengan kerjasama semua ahli kumpulan dan juga dengan bantuan beberapa kenalan serta pakar professional yang berpengalaman luas dalam skop yang kami ketengahkan. Setelah itu, kami juga akan menyatakan pengalaman pembelajaran yang diperolehi ketika mengendalikan projek ini. Secara jujurnya, ini merupakan projek pertama yang kami jalankan secara berkumpulan di Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Jika sebelum ini kami lebih cenderung untuk memasuki program yang dianjurkan oleh pihak lain namun pada kali ini kami merasakan sendiri bagaimana rasanya serta pengalaman menganjurkan program sendiri. Sudah tentu ini memberikan satu pengalaman baru bagi kami. Hal ini demikian kerana, segala hal berkaitan dengan projek ini semuanya terletak di bahu kami sendiri. Dari sekecil- kecil tanggungjawab hingga ke sebesar- besar perkara. Pengalaman yang kami peroleh dalam memastikan supaya projek ini berjalan seperti yang dijadualkan dan diharapkan telah memberi satu pengalaman yang susah untuk kami peroleh dari program lainj yang kami sertai.

Humanity. To what extent do humans stop and ponder upon this one word? Do they speak about it loudly only when wars erupted, killing thousands of innocent children? Or when there is a woman being raped repeatedly by several men at a time? Or maybe when there are neighbours screaming at night out of terror but no one comes to help for the fear that humanity is about service of the court? These examples of humanity being wronged are clear. They speak for themselves. But the connotations they ring in humans’ minds are subjective. It is scary and frightening the moment you realize that more people are concerned about the news itself, rather than the victims’ situations. People are concerned about wars; but do they pause for a while thinking about a mother crying and praying in front of the graves of all of her children, died in one single attack? Or the emotional burdens and psychological pain of the raped woman that she may finally hope death is there to save her? Or of those people screaming in terror? Because we tend to reflect on our position first- wars are not in my country, it is not my children who died, it is not my sister being raped and it is not my mother screaming out of terror. It is not happening to us, so why bother at all? Some people, maybe more in figures than what we could imagine, think this way and are not ashamed of their own thought. Humanity is served; claimed them- served because they are safe, while others suffer.

            How about those who are groomed in a happy environment especially so that they will suffer later? They were given life; so that they can be killed. How does the word humanity respond to this situation, and to what level it is being dehumanized? Based on the Oxford Dictionaries, one of the definitions of humanity is the quality of being humane; benevolence. It underlies actions of humans towards people around them. But, not necessarily it will be served in its fundamental manner. We do, after all, have conflicts of interests. There are some people who hide behind the face of humanity to permit their violent actions- like attacking a country without solid reason; directly switching off the lives of the innocent citizens due to unsupported claims. Yes, issues of this kind are the issues that revolve around the importance of a group of people- around their needs, their cares and their positions. How about single individuals? Let’s say, if these individuals have certain shortcomings would they want to think twice of the helps offered to them; even if acceptance means serious physical or psychological pains to the sacrificing ones? In certain situations, yes, people can shake off the offer- dismissing it as an act of nobility. How about in life-threatening situations? Kill yourself or kill others?

            The novel ‘Never Let Me Go’ by Kazuo Ishiguro has addressed these crucial questions in such a way that readers nod their heads to the contrasting aspects of humanity and yet made them wonder in utter bewilderment, what has led them to nod. It is a great writing that discusses values of humanity from the bottommost aspect of being a human and how they are reflected in the life of its characters. The reasons we pick humanity out of so many other values depicted in the story are; it is a fundamental concern for the existence of the clones which is their purpose of life- to die to let normal humans survive; yet the creation of these clones itself speaks contrasted values of humanity more audaciously than ever.

As a start, we agreed to choose and write about a dystopian novel entitled ‘Never Let Me Go’ by Kazuo Ishiguro based on several reasons. One of them is because the elements used in the novel especially the characters; has been able to reflect the main theme of the story. This will lay a deeper understanding in the sense that the relation of the crucial elements in the novel can be connected with each other in a pack and meaningful way. Also, the novel’s major focus which is on cloning, stands out in its relevancy which sparks great debate in today’s world.

1.0. PENDAHULUAN

Jurnal refleksi ini ditulis bertujuan melaporkan setiap langkah kerja yang dilakukan dalam usaha menjayakan kajian Pembangunan Diri. Tempat kajian yang telah dipilih oleh kumpulan kami ialah Taman Botani Kepong.

Dalam jurnal ini kami akan mengemukakan beberapa refleksi yang telah berlaku dalam usaha menyiapkan kajian ini. Selain itu, kami juga menyatakan peristiwa-peristiwa yang berlaku ketika melaksanakan kajian tersebut. Kajian yang dibuat ini amat kompleks maka banyak langkah diperlukan untuk menyempurnakannya. Tambahan pula, berlakunya peristiwa-peristiwa penting yang urutannya haruslah dikenal pasti. Kami sekumpulan berpendapat bahawa peristiwa dan urutan peristiwa tersebut adalah penting kerana tanpanya, kajian ini tidak akan dapat disempurnakan.

Kajian ini juga dilakukan dengan kerjasama semua ahli kumpulan dan juga dengan bantuan beberapa pegawai Taman Botani Kepong yang merupakan pakar mengenai alam sekitar. Terutamanya perkara yang berkaitan dengan Taman Botani Kepong. Setelah itu, kami juga akan menyatakan pengalaman pembelajaran yang diperolehi  dalam proses membuat kajian. Proses membuat kajian ini merupakan pengalaman kali pertama kami semasa di Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia dalam perkara sebegini, iaitu berkaitan dengan alam sekitar. Sebelum ini, pengalaman terakhir adalah dalam kajian tentang alam sekitar semasa di Tingkatan 5. Sudah tentu, terdapatnya banyak perbezaan institusi pengajian hutan tropika jika dibandingkan pada masa itu dengan kini, terutamanya hasil daripada usaha pembangunan, pemeliharaan dan pemuliharaan.

Walaupun kami telah mempelajari subjek Geografi yang merangkumi pengetahuan  hutan tropika di bangku sekolah, namun kami sudah ditinggalkannya lebih daripada 4 tahun lalu. Pengetahuan kami sudah tentu terbatas serta banyak perkara yang telah kami lupakan. Tambahan pula, kami sebagai pelajar jurusan undang-undang, tidak menyentuh langsung isu pemeliharaan alam sekitar dalam proses pembelajaran kami ataupun dalam sukatan pelajaran kami maka pengetahuan ini hanyalah terbatas kepada bacaan am. Oleh itu, pengalaman yang diperoleh dalam melaksanakan kajian ini sangat baru, asing dan penting kepada kami semua.

The Analysis of the themes Education and Culture Vs Religion in the novel “The River Between” by Ngugi Wa Thiong’o

Based on one of the tasks given to us, we were needed to analyse two novels in which for the first novel we were needed to analyse two themes whereas for another novel, we were needed to analyse the main characters of the novel. For the novels, it was up to us on deciding the novels that we wanted to analyse. After further discussion between our group members, we had decided to analyse the novel “The River Between” by Ngugi Wa Thiong’o. The author, Ngugi Wa Thiong’o was born in Kenya in 1938. During his youth, he had lived in a colonial time in his country where the British had colonized. 

Most of his novels including “The River Between” were influenced by the colonization of the British towards his country. He was once imprisoned because of his straight forward literature in condemning the neo-colonial life in Kenya. From the imprisonment, he had decided not to use English anymore as a medium for his writing but prefer to focus more on his mother tongue, Gikuyu. He felt that if he kept using English as a medium for his literature, it will be like he is living his life like the white people and it will eventually kills the beauty of his own mother tongue language. One of the novel that he had wrote in his mother tongue language was Caitani Mutharabaini (1981) which was then translated in English that was called, “Devil on The Cross” (1982). The novel “The River Between” was published on the year 1965 in which the novel is about the clash between the Christians and the indigenous tribe of one of the African country that resembles the life on the people in his country at that time. The two groups were divided by a river in which in resembles the differences between the two groups.

1.             PENGENALAN
        
Sesebuah novel mempunyai konteks tersendiri dan kebanyakannya adalah persoalan tentang perhubungan manusia. Hubungan antara manusia dapat dibentuk melalui sesebuah novel dengan melibatkan konflik dalam dan luaran yang ditempuhi oleh manusia dalam pergaulan seharian. Penulis novel akan cuba menekankan psikologi dan permasalahan dalaman watak dan perwatakan. Emosi sesuatu watak dalam novel akan diperkukuhkan dengan penekanan terhadap psikologi dan tahap pembacaan. Novel “Love You Mr. Arrogant” ini memberi konflik dalaman antara watak utama lelaki dan wanita serta meletakkan pelbagai permainan emosi melalui pergaulan seharian.

           Setiap karya sastera terutama genre novel, cerpen dan drama mempunyai pelaku yang kita sebut sebagai watak. Secara mutlaknya watak itu ialah pelaku-pelaku dalam karya sastera tertentu yang kita baca. apabila kita membicara tentang watak, kita tidak dapat lari dari menyentuh jenis-jenis watak. Watak itu mungkin terdiri daripada manusia biasa, binatang dan mungkin juga makhluk ghaib. Watak-watak ini tergolong kepada beberapa kelompok atau jenis watak. Antara jenis-jenis watak adalah watak utama, sampingan, bulat, pipih, putih, dan hitam. Dalam peperiksan watak yang menjadi tumpuan soalan peperiksaan adalah watak utama, watak sampingan , watak bulat serta watak pipih.
